"A life coach does for the rest of your life what a personal trainer does for your health and fitness." - Elaine MacDonald

Do you find that people come to you for advice often? That your friends look to you to help them with their problems? That even strangers on the streets open up to you with little prompting? You may have a gift for life coaching.

Life coaching is an important field that combines motivation and a little bit of counselling. A psychiatrist analyses a patient for an illness or mental problem, and looks into their past for the cause, while a life coach looks to the client's future, pushing them to fulfil their potential.

Like Elaine MacDonald said, life coaches are a lot like sports coaches or personal trainers. They work alongside their client to make them, not physically fit or win games, but to make them emotionally fit and win at life. Guiding them towards a new and more meaningful life, or helping decide on business or career matters are part and parcel of a life coach's job.

The great thing about getting into life coaching is that anyone can do it! Yes, even you! There is no age, gender or racial barrier in the life coaching business. You don't need a graduate degree or a list of references. You will however need a credential or a certificate from a reputable school so that your clients will have confidence in your abilities and will know that you're not just some fly-by-night operator.

So what exactly does a life coach do for their clients? Well, life coaches come into someone's life when they're confused, in need of guidance, overwhelmed with life, or in a personal or career crossroads. When I was 25 I was stuck in a go-nowhere job that I didn't really like. I felt like wasn't making the most of my skills or talent and I was worried that I might not find my dream job. I felt like all my friends were doing better than me and here I was a lowly, underpaid assistant. I needed some guidance and help with my career. I really could have used a life coach. At the time though I didn't even know life coaches existed! But I'm glad they do now.

Life coaches help people through seemingly mundane problems. Because even what seem like little things like organizing your messy house or closet can lead to organizing your entire life! It does seem trifling at first but once someone takes that first step of putting things into their rightful place, it can and will lead to putting your entire life in the right place as well.

If you're at a personal crossroads at the moment and you want to change your life and other people's lives for the better, consider becoming a life coach. It can be a very fulfilling occupation that will make you feel better about yourself and others.
